Jan-Michael attended Ventura College and studied art but dropped out in the second year. In his spare time he built model hot rods and started surfing. Soon he was spotted by a talent agent, Dick Clayton. Clayton already had an eye for talent since he discovered the legendary actor, James Dean. He could see immediately that Jan had that natural honest look about him. It was a combination of vulnerabilty with a hint of danger undearneath that made him all the more attractive but Jan-Michael once said, "I never tried for an image", he was just being himself.
