This movie is based on a true story and the title pretty much tells the story. Six inmates of the infamous 'rock', Alkatraz prison, decide to try to break out.
Set in 1946 the movie tells the story of six men sent to the 'rock' for crimes ranging from robbery, murder and numerous prison escapes, because it is the only institution left that can cope with them.
The prison is austere, the days filled with hard labour and jibes from less than subtle and sympathetic guards, and so the men plot to escape using the guards routine with keys against them, and then make it to shore by hijacking the boat that brings the officers who live in San Francisco to work and back every day, to flee to the main land.
David Carradine plays their leader, David Morse his first lieutenant, and Jan Michael Vincent has a much smaller role, although his character is supposed to be one of the toughest and meanest.
The story is well told and each member of the gang puts in an admirable performance, still, it lacks something …. Oh yes, excitement.
Even Jan Michael Vincent fails to find a way to make this movie more exciting and interesting, and puts in a mediocre performance in even this small role. His character has little to say and just walks around and follows orders, and unfortunately, there wasn't much Jan could do with the material except look mean and broody, which by this time in his career was his usual expression anyway!
